TOM HUYTON PLAY PARK

We were delighted today, 5th September 2005, to be present at the ground breaking ceremony in the Play Park.  We have been raising funds for a roundabout for the disabled, to be sited in this park, and our fund raising was completed in April of 2005.  We look forward to the opening ceremony in about a months time.

Extension to the Tom Huyton Memorial Play Park

The Town Council is please to announce the long awaited commencement of the extension to the Tom Huyton Memorial Play Park.  Work commenced on the 5th September, and a "ground breaking" ceremony was held in the afternoon.

The Tom Huyton Play Park was refurbished by the Town council in 2003 as a cost of £278,000.  The play park was always very popular but the play equipment had come to the end of its recommended life span and was in poor condition with rising maintenance costs.  The new equipment and layout has proven a big success and the play park is now used more than ever.  The addition of a refreshment kiosk at busy times has only added to the attraction.

Some of the equipment in the refurbished play area was accessible to children with disabilities, but there was a belief, championed by Town Councillor Margaret Collins, that more could be provided for children with disabilities.  This led to the involvement of the parents of some local children with disabilities becoming involved, led by Carolynn Bennett of Midsomer Norton with the Lions Club and the Stones Cross public house raising funds for some of the new accessible play equipment.  There was even a donation of a piece of equipment from Mowlems, the construction company involved with the Bath Spa project, negotiated by Carolynn.

The Town Council has fully supported the proposals to extend the play park to give greater accessibility and has extended the car park to enable the extension to be constructed on a level area.  The Council has purchased some of the play equipment and will be paying for the expensive safety surfacing necessary, together with fencing etc.  In all, the project will cost around £80,000.

Work on the extension to the play park will take around three weeks.  There will obviously be some disruption whilst works progress, but this will be kept to a minimum.  It should be noted that almost of the new play equipment is of the "inclusive" variety so that able bodied children can also use it.
