YEOVIL TOWN CHAMPIONSHIP BAND.

Saturday 16th April brought a new dimension to Lion concerts when the Yeovil Town Championship Band entertained. Giving a polished performance befitting to their status, the band, under the direction of resident conductor David Hayward were well in charge of their varied programme. Horn Soloist, Anne Hawkes, played “Over the Rainbow” delightfully, and Euphonium Soloist, Paul Slater produced an unusual sound from the Church balcony playing the quiet and meloduius Benedictus. Liberty Fanfare by John Williams proved a lively concert opening with television represented by Hawaii Five-O. Peter Graham’s Gaelforce, an Irish Jigg was fast and furious David told us that the band were competing with him to see who finished first. (The band won!) Doyle’s slow Lament gave relief but then the popular Cossack Wedding Dance soon got us going again. Hello Dolly, involved audience participation. Two Symphonic Dances, “America” and “Somewhere”, featured the cornet section, led admirably by principal cornet, Kevin Darby. The concert ended with an encore, “The Muppet Show”.
Thanking the band, programme sponsors and audience for their support, Lion President John Whittock also spoke highly of the Lions activities committee who organised this special event. Band member Kath Darby won the Easter Egg Draw, with all proceeds of the evening going to to the Lions Local Charities.
Next concert is on the 14th May, also at Midsomer Norton Methodist Church, starting at 7:00pm with the return of the Maesteg Male Voice Choir.
